During the previous two years APPM reached a zero factor in disposing solid biomass waste

09 aug 2018

On the basis of four-year work at TPP-1, Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC, of a multifuel boiler by Valmet company, which burns a fuel mixture from wastewater sludge and bark waste, the mill reached a zero factor in disposing of solid biomass waste. According to figures given by the APPM environment protection the total amount of wastewater sludge and bark waste removal to the landfill in 2014 was equal to 176.6 thousand tons, in 2015 – 66.3 thous. tons and in 2017 – zero.

The figures of wastewater sludge and bark waste disposal show a positive trend in the usage of these wastes for energy generation from biomass: in 2014 – 521.6 thous. tons, in 2017 – 682.7 thous. tons.

It’s worth mentioning some important things. During wood preparation for pulp production (debarking, sawing and cutting to chips) a big amount of bark waste is produced in the form of bark, wood dust, knots, low-quality chips etc. A great amount of wastewater sludge is produced by the department for biological treatment of process and household water.

It contains surplus activated sludge and primary settler sludge. Wastewater sludge is a hard-burning type of organic wastes due to its very high moisture content (now it is 72%, earlier – up to 80%). From the beginning of 2000 to 2015 2/3 of produced wastewater sludge was taken to the dump site together with bark waste. The remaining bark waste was burnt in boilers at TPP-3. At the moment all bark waste and wastewater sludge are used as a fuel at TPP-1 and TPP-3 of the mill. It became possible owing to the implementation of projects aimed at increasing the biomass content in the mill’s fuel balance.

In particular – startup in 2014 of a multifuel waste heat boiler supplied by Valmet company with innovative technology – fuel combustion in bubbling fluidized bed (HybexTM), and modernization of sludge dewatering system with installation of Flottweg decanters in 2015.

As it was commented by Member of the Board of Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC Vladimir Krupchak, the company intentionally upgrades and rebuilds the existing departments by implementing innovative technologies, including efficient waste handling, maximizing the involvement of waste in the mill’s economic turnover. From 2014, when the boiler was put into operation, the ecological efficiency of thermal and electric energy output at APPM increased significantly, - noted Vladimir Krupchak. – As of the end of 2017 a reduction in coal consumption amounted to more than 49 thous. tons, black oil consumption – 8.8. thous. tons per year, environmental pays-off dropped by 2.6 mln. rubles”.
